A Diamond Jubilee

A diamond jubilee is the celebration of a true milestone in the beautiful tradition of marriage. A diamond jubilee is the celebration of a couple’s 60th wedding anniversary and it is traditional that the couple gives and receives gifts of diamonds. These gifts are both exchanged between the couple and given by friends, family and other loved ones. Generally couples will exchange diamond jewellery on their diamond jubilee as a sign of their intimate commitment to one another.

Reaching a 60th wedding anniversary is something that, especially in today’s society, is seen as quite an achievement. It is very highly regarded in commonwealth realms as you can receive a message from the monarch on your anniversary. This can be done by applying to Buckingham Palace or to the Governor-General in commonwealth states.

The diamond jubilee is the final in a list of different milestones in marriage length. These are: wood for five years, tin for ten years, crystal for 15 years, china for 20 years, silver for 25 years, pearl for 30 years, ruby for 40 years, and gold for 50 years. As you can see, the material attached to the milestones increase in value as the time increases and ends with the pinnacle of romance and prestige, the diamond.

Traditions Are Everything

The tradition for celebrating wedding anniversaries in this way originated in medieval Germany. It was tradition that on a couple’s 25th wedding anniversary the wife would be presented with a silver wreath and on their 50th they were presented a golden wreath by friends and family.

The wreaths were a sign of congratulations and also a symbol of their harmonious and loving relationship. As time has gone on the number of milestones recognised has increased but each still has the same essence of congratulating and celebrating the couple’s time together.

Treasures Of The Earth

Diamonds are one of the world’s most natural wonders and beauties. It is the most stable form of carbon, after graphite and is formed under high pressure. Diamonds have an astounding optical aesthetic which makes them eye catching and breathtakingly beautiful.

They are highly sort after not just because of their beauty, but because they are the hardest and most thermal conductive bulk material on earth. There is a saying “the diamond standard”, meaning the best of the best. Reaching a 60 year wedding anniversary is something to truly celebrate and giving a diamond on this occasion is only fitting.
