How to Pick a Good Diamond

Diamonds are an important piece of jewellery to get right. Like many things in life, it is better to have nothing at all than to pretend that you have something. It is always going to be a terribly embarrassing situation if you buy diamond jewellery and it turns out that it is poorly cut, is poor quality, or worse still, you have been given a fake. That is why it is important to know how to pick a good diamond.

The key to picking the right diamond is to look for the four Cs. That is: cut, colour, clarity, and carat weight. Firstly looking at the cut there are two separate parts to a diamonds appearance that you need to consider. These are the shape and the quality of the workmanship.

There are several different kinds of shapes that diamonds are cut in such as round, princess, or heart shapes. Unless you are confident you will be able to pick the right shape for the person you are buying the diamond for, it is a good idea to ask them or someone that knows their taste so that you get it right.

Workmanship Quality

When it comes to the quality of the workmanship of the cut you do need to pay attention to the make of a diamond as this has a big impact on how you judge the quality. It is important for you to be familiar with different makes of diamonds because the make varies greatly between diamonds. You want to make sure you get a make of diamond that is suited to your needs.

Secondly you need to look out for the colour of your diamond. The colours of diamonds range from colourless, which are the most rare and most precious, down to shades of yellow that are less rare and therefore considered less of a commodity. Although having tints of yellow makes the diamond less rare, some people like this in their diamond, so again it is important to get something that suits your needs.

Quality Of The Surface

The clarity of the diamond is dependent on how many ‘flaws’ there are in the stone. You need to decide how important having no flaws is to you and to your wallet as flawless stones are more expensive.

Surprisingly, the carat weight is the final thing to consider when getting a diamond. Although having a bigger diamond may make things more impressive, it does not take away from the beauty, and having a small beautiful diamond is better than a big flawed, miscoloured one.
